From first conversation to payment

The milestones worth defining before sharing company records.

Updated 19 October 2026 · Sources and methodology

Discovery and fit

A provider may begin with industry, company size, systems and available history. Ask what it needs at this stage and avoid sending raw records unnecessarily. Establish whether you are talking to a licensee, agent, platform or adviser.

Sample and diligence

Agree a sample’s purpose, size, recipients, retention and permitted handling before transfer. A technical review can identify missing fields or unusable formats; a rights review can identify records that must be excluded. Keep these issues separate from price negotiation.

Contract and delivery

Write down scope, delivery method, security requirements, use rights, acceptance criteria, timelines and responsibility for preparation costs. If the recipient can reject the package, define objective reasons and a cure process.

Acceptance and payment

A fixed fee may still be conditional on delivery or acceptance. Revenue share depends on later sales and the calculation in the agreement. Specify payment currency, due dates, reporting, taxes, late payment remedies and who resolves disagreements.

Your next step

See where your company’s data could fit.

  • Begin with a company description, not an export
  • Review systems, retained history and exclusions
  • Compare the terms before sharing records
